Obituary for Earl "Gene" Eugene Derby

Earl “Gene” Derby, 87, of Jacksonburg, WV died Tuesday, December 10, 2019 while at VA Center in Clarksburg, WV.

Gene was born December 24, 1931 in Pine Grove, WV; son of the late Willis and Addie (Ingram) Derby.

He was a retired guard for the former Ormet, retired bus aide for Wetzel County Schools, a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean war, member of Benton M. Lowe American Legion Post 81 in Pine Grove, loved working on small engines, one of the founding members of the Jacksonburg Volunteer Fire Department-having served as a chief at one time, Pine Grove Ambulance Squad where he served as an EMT, and member of New Martinsville Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Norman, Leroy and Howard Derby and three sisters, Edith Bates, Ruth Bates and Doris Haught.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-four years, Shirley Derby; five children, Judy (Mike) Yokum of Fresno, CA, Markus (Ruth) Derby of Paden City, WV, Sandra Derby of Reader, WV, Shelby (Jeff) Mason of Reader, WV and Gary (Sue) Derby of Orville, OH; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends received 3-7 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2019 at the Williams Funeral Home, 12750 Shortline Hwy, Pine Grove, WV were services will be held 2 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2019 with nephew Richard Fonte officiating. Burial to follow in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery near Hastings, WV.
