Obituary for Joan Earlene Leasure

Leasure, Joan Earlene, 78, of Big Run, went to be with her Lord and Savior, January 19th, at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a courageous two year battle with cancer.

She was born August 20, 1934, at home in Big Run. Earlene was the daughter of the late Thomas U. and Edna (Dunlap) Rice. She was preceded in death by her brother Ray (Phil) Rice.

Earlene graduated from the Ohio Valley General School of Nursing in Wheeling, WV in 1956. She retired from nursing after 40 years of service, dedicating the last 35 years employed at Wetzel County Hospital. The highlight of her professional career was receiving the Ruth Spencer Dunfee Award from OVGH alumni for excellence in nursing in 2005. She was an inspiration to many nurses that she not only mentored but helped shape their careers. The three things in life that she will be most remembered for was the love for her family, her faith and her nursing career.

She left behind a legacy of family, her loving husband of 57 years Elias Leasure (Jr), her four children, Tom (Sheri) Leasure of New Martinsville, Jane (Mike Ashburn) Carlin of Fairmont, David (Lisa) Leasure of Browns Summit, NC and Jean (Scott) Cooper of Paden City. Her ten grandchildren, Adam (Dana), Stuart (Valerie), Clinton (Hannah), Hayley, Ean, Sara, Ben, Chad, Gabi and Luke. Earlene also was blessed with three great grandchildren Olivia, Wyatt and Abaigeal. She has two surviving brothers Blaine (June) Rice of Pine Grove and Jerry (Jean) Rice of GA as well as many nieces and nephews.

Earlene was a lifetime member of the Higgins Chapel Church of Christ. She gave countless hours to her community answering to any need for help day or night. Earlene loved life but more than anything her family and friends.

Family and friends will be received at Williams Funeral Home in Pine Grove, WV, on Tuesday January 22, from 1-4 and 6-9. There will be a Florence Nightingale Service at the funeral involving any nurse in attendance honoring Earlene's dedication to the nursing profession. Funeral services will be held Wednesday January 23 at the Williams Funeral Home at 11:00 am with Ed Melott officiating. Interment at the Mannington Memorial Park.
